A Strombolian activity started at 5pm on February 27 from the new south-east crater.
The earlier signals of activity, registered on January 23, gradually intensified, creating a small lava flow that quickly reached the base of the cone. The flow currently reaches an altitude of about 2850 mt above sea level. The paroxysm is currently concentrated in the summit area and do not represent a danger either to things or to people. This Strombolian activity's producing some spectacular lava fountains and also some ash emission from the crater, which is dispersed by the wind towards the villages of Zafferana and Linguaglossa with a modest fallout of ash.
The international airport of Catania is still operating and the activity of volcano Etna is under constant control by the INGV - Catania, National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
1st March, the activity continued with substantially the same intensity. The lava flow had stopped at about 2700 m and just over 1.5 km away from the vent. The new pyroclastic cone formed continue to grow rapidly in height and width, and its eastern base was beginning to fill the crater depression.
By late evening, the activity showed a decrease, accompanied by a rapid decline in the amplitude of volcanic tremor.
